“Are you religious?” someone might ask me.

“I’d say I’m Spiritual.” I’d reply.

Cue the tumbleweed……….

No one knows what to say.
Because saying you are on a spiritual path brings up all kinds of weird assumptions.

Is she vegan?
Does she hug trees?
Is she an activist?
Does she swear?
Is it a cult?

Here’s my take on the spiritual path, see how it fits with you.

  • It’s personal.

There are SO many people out that say they can show you The Way.
In my opinion, there is only one way.
That is the way of YOUR soul.
Only you know what feels right to you.
You are the only person that has walked in your shoes.

I’m not dissing all of the great authors, wayseers, thought leaders and mystics here.
What I am saying is empower yourself.
See them for who they are – humans just like us.
Everything that you read, hear and immerse yourself into has been filtered through human perception. That means ego and personality, no matter how evolved a human is, they are still human.

Become a student of all of the things that light you up, lead you to heal and open your heart.
Learn as much as you can, but take into your own life only what you need.
Weigh and measure information, and when it strikes a chord, know that this is for you.
Take what resonates, and graciously leave the rest.

  • It’s about being conscious.

Expand your awareness, starting with yourself.
Being able to know who you are, how you feel, what you need to heal and being a willing spirit to make progress are not only the starting point of a spiritual journey, but also a constant touchstone.
Learn to know what is coming up for you and the energy you bring to other people and situations.
Don’t make snap judgements about others.
Look past the obvious information you are getting via their behaviour, and dig deeper.
Be conscious about what could be driving this.
How might they be feeling in this moment, and who are they in truth?

Choose what you make things mean.
Step out of the automatic thought processes that we are wired to run throughout the day.
Challenge your own thoughts and ask yourself to focus on what is true in a given situation.
Look for the dots joining up in unexpected ways.

  • It’s healing.

Spirituality is about love – for yourself and others.
It’s a path and a way of life that helps you to move towards forgiving yourself and others, and healing the rifts, wounds and issues that you have within you and around you.
Sometimes the healing that you go through won’t feel healing when its happening.
It will feel like life has chewed you up and spat you out.
But in the aftermath there will be a gift, a peeling back of the layers that concealed your true self.
A shedding of who you thought you were, as you make your way back to who you were always meant to become.

  • It’s being a good human.

Walking a spiritual path is about exercising traits that support yourself, others and the earth.
Not harming people or the planet, but not being a walk over at the same time.
It’s that do no harm but take no shit thing in action.
Empower yourself, and look to empower others, but not at a cost to who you are.

Being honest, having integrity, being an authentic person, forgiving others and having good intentions for yourself and others are spiritual qualities.
Knowing that you are doing your best and so is everyone else, based on who they are, their psychology and experiences to date and their level of consciousness.
Not being superior or arrogant because you feel you may be more evolved than others – there’s an irony in that.

  • It’s the belief in a higher consciousness.

No matter what you call that higher consciousness, the belief in it is a cornerstone of spirituality.
Suspending your ego and not needing other people’s definition of that higher power to match up with yours. Knowing that we are all connected, and we are all precious.
Made from stardust and consciousness, souls in human bodies here to learn, expand & experience Here to love ourselves and others through, and raise the vibration of our species and our planet.

  • It’s being responsible.

The more aware we become, the more responsible we can become also.
Responsible for what we say and do, how we show up and for doing the personal work that we need to. Digging deep and finding the courage that lights the path to heal our wounds, knowing that there is a whole load more happy on the way to forgiveness that there will even be when we stay entrenched in resentment, pain and ego.

Showing up for ourselves and the ones we love.
Becoming the best version of us that we can be, and knowing that we are worthy of that.
Loving the parts of us that might not be on board with our worthiness, because life experience has wounded us deeply and made us feel less than.
Being spiritual is knowing when you need to do some work on something.
Recognizing that when feelings come up for you that are negative, harmful or uncomfortable, that this is a sign to lean in.

Being responsible also means that you need to learn to look after yourself, your energy and your wellbeing. You are the only person who can do this in truth. Choices that you make every day about how you will spend your energy, what you will eat and drink, how you will look after your mental and emotional health and what you think are all up to you.
Who you are becoming is up to you.
When you are ready to take responsibility this starts to feel obvious.
You can show up and claim your place in the universe as the unique being that you are, and know that this is right.

Let me know what you think, and what people have said to you about Spirituality!
